American actor RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed television series Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond the screen to disability awareness and inclusion.

Mitte died on Monday in Brownsville, Texas, according to reports citing local authorities and his representatives. His death was confirmed in a statement released by his representative, Sean Reilly.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” the statement read.

Authorities initially said the cause of death had not been established, with further investigation and an autopsy expected.

For many television viewers, Mitte will be remembered as Walter White Jr., the son of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, in Breaking Bad. The crime drama, which aired from 2008 to 2013, followed the transformation of a high school chemistry teacher into a major figure in the illegal drug trade.

Mitte appeared throughout the series’ five-season run, portraying a teenager navigating family tensions as his father’s criminal activities gradually unravelled the household.

His performance also carried a personal significance. Mitte lives with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects movement and coordination, and his character shared the condition. His portrayal brought a measure of authenticity to the role and helped broaden the representation of people with disabilities in mainstream television.

Rather than allowing his disability to define the limits of his career, Mitte used his experience to challenge stereotypes about people living with disabilities and encourage more inclusive representation in the entertainment industry.

His representatives said he used his platform to promote disability awareness and inclusion. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, organisations associated with supporting people with disabilities and their families. He also served as president of the Mitte Foundation, which supported philanthropic and community initiatives.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte moved to Los Angeles as a teenager to pursue acting. Before gaining wider recognition through Breaking Bad, he appeared in smaller television roles.

Following the success of the series, he continued working in film and television, including appearances in Switched at Birth and The Guardians of Justice. He also worked as a producer on independent film projects.

His career helped establish him as an actor whose public profile extended beyond entertainment, particularly through his efforts to promote disability rights and challenge conventional portrayals of disability on screen.

Mitte’s death marks a loss for the entertainment industry and disability advocacy community, where his work helped draw attention to the importance of inclusion and representation.
