Google honours Christy Essien-Igbokwe on her posthumous 58th birthday

Global tech giant, Google has honoured late Christy Essien-Igbokwe today, November 11, 2018, with a doodle.

The doodle is to celebrate Nigeria’s Lady of Songs’ posthumous 58th birthday.

A doodle is the temporary replacement of the Google logo on its homepage to celebrate holidays, events, achievements or people.

Essien-Igbokwe was born on November 11, 1960, in Okat, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Fondly remembered for her hit song – Seun Rere, the Lady of Songs also released many tunes in different Nigerian languages such as: Igbo, Ibibio, Efik, Hausa, Yoruba.

She was a true Nigerian in the sense that she could also speak the languages she sang in, fluently.

Essien-Igbokwe came into limelight in 1976 as a result her role in the hilarious TV program, The New Masquerade, which aired on the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) network.

She went ahead to display her acting prowess as she played Akpenor, the wife of the flamboyant, Chief Jegede Sokoya.

Essien-Igbokwe was the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).

Christy Essien-Igbokwe died in 2011 after a brief illness at the age of 50.
