Chelsea’s Willian (L) against Liverpool’s Van Dijk in an Anfield encounter today.

A thrilling encounter at Anfield today saw runaway Premier League champions, Liverpool defeat Chelsea 5-3.

With their trophy presentation confirmed after the game, the Reds were in the better mood as they edged an eight-goal thriller on Merseyside in their final home game of the season.

Midfielder Naby Keita’s right-footed strike opened the scoring, before Trent Alexander-Arnold curled in a sumptuous free-kick and Georginio Wijnaldum struck two minutes from time to put the Reds in a comfortable 3-0 cushion. French striker, Olivier Giroud pulled one back in injury time in the first half.

The second half saw an inspired display from American forward Christian Pulisic after Roberto Firmino seemed to have put the game to bed-with his first home league goal since March 2019- early in the second half.

Pulisic set-up substitute Tammy Abraham for a goal in the 61st minute before finding the net himself in he 73rd minute, sparkling hopes of a draw that would have kept the Blues in third position, ahead of an all deciding last match of the season.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would have the last word though as he rifled home to secure the win.

What Does This Mean?
With Manchester United picking up a draw earlier today against West Ham, they go third on the table with Chelsea’s latest loss placing them at fourth. The Red Devils are now level on points with the Blues and Sunday’s season finale will determine who makes the cut for the UEFA Champions League next season between United, Chelsea and Leicester City.

For Liverpool, the 30 year dream is now officially a reality and we can expect fireworks at Anfield.
