Commissioner Selection: Ede Women Leaders Reject Dr Oyewale, Rally Round Hajia Giwa’s Candidacy

Women, comprising market women and women leaders in Ede Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas on Thursday vehemently rejected the sudden emergence of Dr Oyewale as a Commissioner-designate for Ede Township.

This came to fore when the women showed their grievances to the State’s party chairman, Prince Gboyega Famoodun in his residence.

According to them, Hajia Latifat Giwa is their preferred candidate for the position because of her antecedents. To them, Hajia Giwa is a party woman who takes care of women, youths and party leaders in her constituency.

She also shows patriotism and high sense of responsibility and loyalty to the APC in Ede and Osun in general. They added that Hajia Giwa always squeezes from her busy schedule to attend ward and local government meetings whenever she’s available, and fulfils her duties to the party, unlike others.

The women also held that it would be undemocratic for a very few privileged individuals to impose a commissioner over thousands of indigenes of Ede Township without due consultations.

“The commissioner that they want to choose for us, we don’t want him. We want Alhaja Giwa because she is a mobiliser. If we need anything, she is the one.

She is the one that is taking care of us. We don’t want any person that won’t know the women. We are appealing to the Governor and the Chairman to help us to choose Alhaja Giwa as our commissioner,” Alhaja Olugbile Balkis, Ede North Local Government’s women leader emphasised.

The women chanted “Giwa lafe o, Giwa lafe, Giwa is okay.”

While appealing to the Governor to yield to their demand since that is the only solution to unite all the party members in Ede, they were confident that with Alhaja Giwa as a commissioner, the APC in Ede will grow in leaps and bonds. They added that the kind gesture, loyalty and inclusiveness of Hajia Giwa made their open grievance be the first they had ever shown in the house of a party chairman.

The women thereby maintained that their grievance is an opportunity for the government to listen to the cries of women in Ede, having rejected imposition in its entirety.

Alhaja Olugbile Balkis, Mrs Adegboye Alice, Mrs Adeshina Iyabo and Mrs Bello Ganiyat led women leaders from Ede North, Ede South, Ede East Local Governments and Area Council respectively.

Also at the APC Chair’s residence were the Iyaloja of Ede, Alhaja Ajagbe Memunat and women leaders in the eleven wards in Ede North Local Government.

It would be recalled that Hajia Latifat Giwa once picked her district’s Senatorial and House of Representatives tickets consecutively, but out of her respect for party supremacy, stepped aside for the choice of her party. It is also a public knowledge that Hajia Giwa’s unflinching loyalty to the party is second to none.
