The Department of State Services (DSS), Abia State Command arrested a sixty-three-year-old woman, Chinyere Nkwocha, Umunkwa village, Ndume Ibeku area of Umuahia North Local Government, of the state for a baby factory in the State Command.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), said the baby factory was uncovered by the DSS, Abia State Command, and 10 victims were rescued
The victims, aged between one and 24 years, included seven young girls, six of whom are pregnant, one lactating mother, and two boys who are minors.
NAPTIP announced that both the suspects and victims have been transferred to the Abia State Liaison Office for further investigation and necessary actions.
The director-general of NAPTIP, Prof. Fatima Waziri–Azi, reiterated that the rising incidents of baby trafficking and the spread of baby factories nationwide are alarming.
She added that there have been disturbing reports and widespread public concern about the sale of babies and facilities that trap young girls, recruit men to impregnate them, and sell the babies once they are born.
